It’s a frigid January morning, you build in an extra 5 minutes or more to warm up your car before you head to work. However, according to The Hinkle Charitable Foundation’s Anti-Idling Primer you shouldn’t idle your car, for a variety of reasons. Many cities are beginning to pass laws to ban idling for environmental reasons. Beyond the legal ramifications, here are a few other reasons according to the primer why you shouldn’t idle.

Driving the car warms it up faster than having it idle in the driveway.

It’s bad for the car, having your car idle in your driveway forces the engine “to operate in a very inefficient and gasoline-rich mode that, over time, can degrade the engine’s performance and reduce mileage.”

Over the course of a year if you idle your car for 5 minutes a day estimates that the average V8-engine car will waste 20 gallons of gas, not only does it produce 440 pounds of carbon dioxide, but costs at least $60.

Exhaust is hazardous to human health. Studies have linked exhaust emissions to increased rates of cancer, heart and lung disease, asthma and allergies. It can be just as bad as second hand smoke to passersby, especially children in strollers who are close to the tailpipe. Studies show that children have lower IQ’s when they live near high traffic areas.
